St. Thérèse of Lisieux

St. Thérèse’s Little Way and Caring for the Dying

Father Terry was on his way to spend a sabbatical in a Trappist monastery when he was faced with the need to become the primary caregiver for his aging parents. Over the next several months, he took care of them, learning important lessons of humility along the way. His beacon was the life and Little Way of St. Thérèse of Lisieux.

His parents, married for 65 years, died of cancer seven months apart. Father Terry remained with each until the end.

Father Terry then made his pilgrimage to the monastery and now relates his experiences with his family and the story of St. Thérèse in his teaching.

St. Thérèse died at age 24, suffering the agony of suffocation from tuberculosis and the dark night of God’s absence in her prayers. Her spiritual and physical passage from living to dying and death revealed her “Little Way” and challenged the spirituality of her care-giving sisters in the Carmel community.
